Hello!
My name is Nicole Antonio and I am senior studying Industrial and Systems
Engineering with a pre-med option. I enjoy writing, but most of my
classes are very dense and technical which leaves little room for writing
exercises. That is the main reason I am excited about this course; I feel as
though the writing assignments in a blog format will provide me with an outlet
for creative expression.
Outside
of school I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, running, and
playing indoor soccer. This past summer I worked for an oil and gas company in
Oklahoma City, called Devon Energy, and the summer before that I lived and worked in
Titanyen, Hiati, for an organization called Mission of Hope. Working in a
third-world country one summer and then corporate America the next definitely
gave me whiplash. However, both opportunities provided me with invaluable
learning experiences that I will never forget.
My
family means everything to me, and I don’t know where I would be without them.
I am the youngest of three children, and look up to my siblings more than they
realize. My parents have also served as incredible role models for me. Our
family has a small dog named Truman who is horrified of thunderstorms… it’s
really pretty cruel we make him live in Oklahoma!

In
my first two years at OU I was heavily involved in the Campus Activities Council
(CAC), specifically with an event called Soonerthon. Soonerthon is OU’s
official philanthropy event which benefits the Children’s Hospital Foundation
and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Last year I began to get more
involved in Crimson Club and the Institute of Industrial Engineers chapter on
our campus. I plan to continue my involvement with these organizations in my
senior year.
I
hope you feel like you have learned a little more about me by reading this blog
post, I look forward learning more about each of you throughout this course!
I will be so glad if this class can provide a creative outlet for you this semester, Nicole! Wonderful! And that is so great that you have worked with Soonerthon; it is a very impressive event. Do you maybe know Cooper Lund? He was in Myth-Folklore last semester (he did this fabulous Perseus Storybook for that class), and I know he was a big part of last year's Soonerthon. Well, whether you know Cooper or not, you might enjoy looking at his Storybook, and just as Perseus was one of the main Greek heroes, you will be seeing a lot of Indian heroes in action in the epics this semester. I hope you will find some positive inspiration in their stories!

And if you have any announcements for activities or events you are involved in, let me know. There is always lots going on to include in the announcements, but activities connected with people in the class are more fun to share! :-)
Hi Nicole! Thank you for your post! Industrial and Systems Engineering with a pre-med options sounds really hard! I am only a pre-med major and I am a little overwhelmed! Family is also an important aspect of my life. Working/volunteering in a third world country is a huge goal of mine. Hopefully this year, I will be able to accomplish that goal. Anyways, I hope to get to know you better throughout this course!
ReplyDeleteHello Nicole,
ReplyDeleteCan I just first say that even though we get a small glimpse of your dog in the photo, that your dog is adorable. I have a good friend of mine that travels to Haiti every summer and a co-worker of mine just spent her second summer in Haiti, with mission/medical work. I plan on serving over in Haiti with my church once I get back from studying abroad next semester.
Hi Nicole! I was surprised when I read you're an Industrial and Systems Engineering major with Pre-med! I'm sure you get that often but that sounds pretty intense so kudos to you! Like you, I'm a senior and my family is very important to me and I have two other siblings as well! Your summer experiences sound so interesting and fun! I've never participated in Soonerthon but you definitely make it sound interesting! I hope you have a good semester ahead and good luck in all your studies!
ReplyDeleteHello Nichole, I think you have a really awesome major! I have never actually met anyone in Industrial and Systems Engineering, but it sounds really interesting. I wish you luck on your pre-med path. I was once also pre-med microbiology major. I found that it was definitely not the field for me and I have a tremendous amount of respect for the people who pursue that career field! Like you my parent is also a major role model to me! It is nice to have grown-ups in your life to look up to.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have a great semester! Good luck on your storybook project :-)
Hi Nicole,
ReplyDeleteI am from a family of four. I have a sister who is 10 years younger than I am. My family is everything for me as well; this is the power that supports me to pursuing a degree in another different country.
When most students reach the junior and senior levels, they do not have much writing classes because most essays are done during the generally education process. My reason for enrolling in this course is the same as you; I have another 5 classes that do not require me to write something.
ReplyDeleteHello, my friend! Wow, I am so happy to see that you are in this course! I can’t believe that we are beginning are senior year – it feels like yesterday that we were playing Uno at the PLC retreat as freshman! It’s been such a joy to get to know you throughout campus involvement and grow to admire you even more over the years. I’m really looking forward to learning even more about each other through all this creativity!
Yeah, switching between those two settings would definitely give you whiplash, but I bet you got a lot out of both. I've never had a huge family, but I do have one sister and my family is really important to me as well.
ReplyDeleteI use to have a dog who was terrified of thunderstorms, too! I always felt guilty, but she was scared of bubblegum, too, so I guess she would have been scared most other places, too. Good luck with your senior year!
Hi Nicole! First of all, I think you are one of the first people I've ever met that majors in Industrial and Systems Engineering with Pre-med! That is pretty impressive! It sounds like you care a lot about other people, especially those in need, which I find inspiring! My family means a lot to me and I have two other siblings as well, but I am the middle child. I hope you have a great senior year! Good luck in all your future plans!
ReplyDeleteHello, Nicole! I enjoyed reading your introduction and getting to know you a little bit throughout. Your experiences in Haiti and at Devon sound like they were very invaluable to you as a person, and it's evident that you really care about what you do. The picture of your family is really nice. I have six siblings all together, so I understand how it is to look up to the elder siblings and vice versa. I hope you enjoy this course and your senior year. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole, it sounds like you a kept busy with all the activities you are doing. Keep up the good work you are almost done with your undergraduate work. You have had some awesome summer activities. I hope that you can accomplish your dream of going to medical school and you have made great strides in achieving that goal. Good luck on your senior year.
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole, it sounds like we have a lot in common! I am a senior engineering student as well, studying chemical and biomedical engineering. I also worked for an oil and gas company last summer at a company called National Oilwell Varco in Houston. It was a great experience and I learned a lot while there. Good luck with the rest of your senior year and make sure to enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool that you were with Mission of Hope two summers ago in Haiti! I went for a week this past May to Gonaives, Haiti to work with the Coreluv Orphanage. It was definitely an experience I will never forget and I loved every minute of working with the kids. Congratulations on being a part of the Crimson Club!
ReplyDeleteHey Nicole! I think it is great that your family means so much to you. Family is so important. I am also the younger of three. I have two older sisters and they are definitely my best friends. I spend so much time with them, my nieces and nephews, and my kids. I also think that its great that you were with the Mission of Hope. That sounds so rewarding. Well, good luck with this semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole! It is crazy how you are doing Industrial and Systems Engineering with a pre-med option. That seems like a really tough major. I am also doing pre-med but with a biology major. I also enjoy spending time being active, and hanging out with my family. It is cool how you already got experience by working for Devon. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHi Twin!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to finally meet the person who has the same as me! Not only do we have the same name, but we also are both pre-med! I like how you have close family ties. My family is also very important to me. They inspire me and influence me to be the best person that I can be. Your work in Devon is impressive! I wish you the best of luck in medical school!
Hi Nicole! I can relate to needing a creative writing outlet for school. I have found that it has also been helping with my other classes too. Your major sounds very intensive so I applaud you for being able to find the time for extra-curricular activities. My cats also have had a hard time adjusting to the sounds the weather makes around here. I just let them hide under the couch until they feel better.
ReplyDeleteNicole, I think it is so cool and inspirational that you are an engineering major with a pre-med option! Not many people do that because not many are able and it is definitely reassuring to see someone living out their dream as well as aspiring to their full potential! I think it is so cool that you interned for Devon Energy. They have a great program as many of my friends have interned for them in the past. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole it is nice to meet you! I feel so bad for your poor dog who is scared of thunderstorms! This really is a rough state for him to live in. My major, Letters, is about the exact opposite of yours. I write all the time! I love that you were involved with Soonerthon that is a great organization here on campus. Good luck in the future!
ReplyDeleteI was definitely in the same boat about taking this class in order to help work on creative writing. I’ve very much enjoyed this course so far! It’s great that you were able to work for Devin and gain some valuable experience there. I would love to work for such a company with my GIS degree! I love how you were also involved with Soonerthon; it’s a great event for a great cause. Good luck with the rest of your studies!
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole! It sounds like you must be so busy with your studies. Engineering with a pre-med option must be really difficult but you'll have a lot of different options you can pursue when you graduate. I hope this course has allowed you to flex your creative muscles a little bit. I've got a lot of friends in engineering, and they always talk about how hard it can be to approach these kinds of writing assignments, but I bet you appreciated the challenge!
